Lake Wappapello State Park

Williamsville, MO

What was exceptional: Very dog friendly and glad they are part of Missouri’s Cabins for Canines program! One of the only places I’ve stayed that didn’t ask me how many dogs I was bringing OR charge a daily “dog fee.” I absolutely love places that don’t penalize you fiscally for bringing a furry friend. Can you imagine if places did that for children??

What was good: The cabin bed has linens already on it, which is fantastic, a microwave, small fridge and is temperature controlled. Easy parking and a very nice area for campfires and a picnic table.

The lake itself is undeveloped as it’s a Corps of Engineers reservoir, so its wonderful to not have houses everywhere. The shoreline is all trees; beautiful! I love the sandy swimming area. Finally, the bird sounds and viewing at Lake Wappapello State Park is incredible.

What was not so great: The bathroom situation needs work. The camper cabins do NOT have running water or a bathroom, and there are no outhouses nearby. The communal bathrooms are at least 1/2 mile away, so every trip requires getting in the car. With multiple cabins it is definitely inconvenient and unnecessarily loud having cabin renters driving back and forth to the bathroom. The bathroom situation needs fixed! Also I saw lots of spiders and insects in the cabin, including a ginormous brown recluse.

Egads! Brown recluse

Dog Digs Assessment & Rating: Appreciate the dog-friendly atmosphere and you can’t beat the price in the off-season… 55% off! However, not much to do in the area (I scoped all the nearby towns etc) and the hiking trails are pretty lame and definitely hardly anyone uses them. It’s like someone really wanted to get two 2.5 mile trails in, but didn’t think about views or terrain. Overgrown and pretty dull. It’s also overgrown and hard to see the lake in general from much of the park, including the cabins. Thus, though dog-friendly, it is pretty much a place for a 1-2 night stay max. I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Parnell & Calhoun’s say in the matter: We don’t see why Mom is complaining about the bathroom thing. She should take a lesson from us and just poop wherever you want (Not in the cabin or course! We are potty-trained gentlemen). We say she should stop complaining and just poop outside randomly, like we do: problem solved!

We loved Lake Wappapello! Lots to sniff. The couch was comfy and had pillows for our cute chins. Calhoun could even jump up on the bed (many beds these days are too tall for our little bodies) and annoy Mom. Also, the camper cabin had AC to keep us cool and relaxed.

P & C rating: 5 out of 5 bones
